Shrink the Task

Big tasks hide their starting point, and time can feel slippery when the ending is unclear. Shrinking the task is a way to get motion, and it does not require you to finish everything at once.

Name one task you have been circling. Write how long it has been waiting and what you do instead when you think of it.

List the small actions inside it, in order, until you can see the real first move. Stop when the first move is something your hands can do.

Rewrite the task as something you are allowed to stop after five minutes and still count as started. Be concrete.

Guess how many minutes the five-minute version will take, try it if you can, and write the actual time. Note the gap without a speech against yourself.

Write the following step and the clock time today or tomorrow when you will touch it again.
